Speaking about Wednesday's warning, they added: "Thunderstorms are expected to develop across much of Scotland by late Wednesday morning and through the afternoon, then slowly die out during the evening".

"Clouds will be broken across Northern Ireland and one or two showers here".

"Strong winds across England and Wales with gusts up to 50mph".

A second spell of heavy showers is likely to move in from the southwest later tomorrow afternoon/evening and there is also the risk of hail and thunder mixed in.

The Met Office has issued weather warnings as heavy rain and high winds are expected in the coming days. Lowest temperatures of 13 or 14 degrees with fresh easterly winds veering moderate southerly.

On Saturday, a "severe" warning for wind is also in place in southern England, the Midlands and Wales. Lingering overnight rain will clear eastern counties and most areas will enjoy a mostly dry day with just well-scattered showers.

After some wet weather on Wednesday, yellow weather warnings for rain and wind come in to force across large swathes of the United Kingdom on Friday and Saturday.

Despite a sunny start to the week, the showers are predicted to affect the entire country before clearing into the North Sea on Friday evening, a Met spokesperson said.

Tuesday and Wednesday will continue unsettled with band of rain moving eastwards across the country, heavy at times.
