Trump blames 'fake news' for poll showing African-Americans think he's racist

Trump, who has not visited Baltimore as president, said he will visit the city at the "right time".

"There's no strategy, I have no strategy, there's zero strategy", he said.

President Trump doubled down on his attacks against congressmember and House Oversight Chair Elijah Cummings Monday, saying he was to blame for Baltimore's crime rates and again lashing out over Cummings's questioning at his committee's hearing over the dire conditions for migrants at the USA border.

"I think that when you're telling the truth that that's hard to classify as anything other than the truth".

The Virginia Legislative Black Caucus said on Monday its members would not attend the event in historic Jamestown marking the 400th anniversary of the first representative assembly in the Western Hemisphere.

Earlier in the day Trump gave a speech in Jamestown, Va., honoring the birth of democracy in the New World in which he cited the contributions and struggles of the African-American community.

A caucus statement didn't specifically mention Cummings (D-Md.) but said Trump's "repeated attacks on Black legislators and comments about Black communities makes him ill-suited to honor and commemorate such a monumental period in history".

Trump's speech to the commemorative meeting of the Virginia General Assembly was boycotted by the legislature's black Democrats, who said the ceremony would be "tarnished unduly" by the presence of Trump.

Trump said without evidence that African Americans "really appreciate" the job he's doing.

That may have given authorities more confidence to clamp down on contentious claims made on the Net with little apparent proof. They stopped near the Sogo department store and set up barricades to block off the area and defend it against police.

During Mr. Trump's remarks, a single protester was led out of the event as he held a sign that read "deport hate".

Baltimore Mayor Bernard Young said Mr Trump should take action to help USA cities.

The president has shown little of that restraint over the last two weeks, with a barrage of racially loaded insults.

A Cummings supporter, the Rev. Al Sharpton, has called Trump a bigot.

That pattern has prompted an outpouring of criticism that Trump is deliberately deepening racial divisions in a pitch to his white, working-class base ahead of his 2020 re-election bid.

Cummings is black and represents a mostly black district, which Trump described as "a rat and rodent infested mess".

"It seems to me the president may be having trouble regulating his body temperature, which I looked it up and there may be medical reason for that; 'Drop in Body Temperature Linked to Dementia,'" Kimmel read out the headline from a 2016 article, adding "I'm sure it's a coincidence though". Sharpton responded to Trump from Baltimore.

"I've received more phone calls than I think on any other subject of people from Baltimore and other cities corruptly run by Democrats, thanking me for getting involved", Trump added. Trump also is under fire for his ongoing attacks on four Democratic congresswomen of colour, who he tweeted should "go back" to their countries - even though three of the four were born in the United States and all are USA citizens.
