United stunned by £50m Longstaff price

Premier League giants Manchester United are reportedly closing in on their third summer signing.

Longstaff, 21, had been linked with a move to Old Trafford after enjoying a breakthrough season at St James' Park.

Having promised major overhaul at the club this summer, Solskjaer's transfer plans are stalling as clubs demand excessive fees for key targets.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Manchester United have been left stunned by Newcastle United's £50 million transfer fee demand for youngster Sean Longstaff, which could force them to call off their pursuit of the midfielder.

Longstaff ended the 2018-19 season with just 13 appearances to his name, in which he found the back of the net on two occasions, while setting up one goal as well.

The Telegraph reports that United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward contacted Magpies managing director Lee Charnley on Saturday to enquire about the player's availability.

The outfit in question come in the form of Manchester United.

Last weekend, Newcastle told Manchester United that Longstaff was not for sale and even if he was he would cost at least as much as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who joined from Crystal Palace in a deal worth £50m.

Longstaff is contracted with Newcastle United till 2022, having signed a new deal in December a year ago.
