NZ has starring role in Disney's Mulan remake

She is joined by cast members Donnie Yen (Star Wars: Rogue One), Jason Scott Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny), Rosalind Chao (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Jet Li as the Emperor.

We've been blessed with several live-action Disney remakes in the past few years. And, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the film's director Niki Caro is only the second woman at the studio to direct a film with a $100 million budget, after filmmaker Ava DuVernay. Mulan's original love interest, Li Shang, and her sidekick Mushu are reportedly out.

However, the animated version included hit songs like "I'll Make A Man Out Of You" and "Reflection", while the trailer doesn't include any of the songs.

Set in ancient China, it follows a young woman, Mulan, played by Crystal Liu, who disguises herself as a warrior to spare her aged father from going into the military.

Infantino Hails France 2019 Women’s World Cup, Plans Tournament Expansion
Infantino has been focused on expanding both World Cup events with the men's scheduled to increase from 32 to 48 teams in 2026. Expanding the World Cup may be hard to do for the next event in 2023 as the bidding process has started with a 24-team format.

This re-imagined story will differ from the animated film, as it is based more closely on the narrative poem, "The Ballad of Mulan".

Some really hate the idea of a Mulan without a Mushu. She looks ideal in the role of Hua Mulan, though this teaser provides only a brief look. This isn't the first of Disney's live-action remakes to receive initial backlash - Will Smith as the Genie in Aladdin received backlash at his first look and Halle Bailey's casting as Ariel is also garnering mixed responses.

The filmmakers aim to focus on the transition of Mulan from a graceful, sheltered girl to a fierce warrior; it comes at the cost of fans' favourite songs and characters such as Mushu.

It continues: "Masquerading as a man, using the name Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength to display her true potential". In its place is a martial arts epic in the grandest tradition of the genre that tells the legendary tale of Hua Mulan in a completely new way.
