Multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein Charged With Sex Trafficking

NEW YORK (AP) - Wealthy financier and registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was arrested Saturday in New York on sex-trafficking charges involving allegations that date to the 2000s, according to law enforcement officials. As part of the plea deal, the Federal Bureau of Investigation ended its probe into whether there were more victims and other powerful people who took part.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Epstein has always been accused of sexual abuse.

Other media outlets report more specifically that Epstein was arrested in the NY area and charged with sex trafficking relating to incidents from the early 2000s.

Officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that the prosecution would argue that Epstein was aware that the girls were minors, some as young as 14.

A message was sent to Epstein's defense attorney seeking comment.

Epstein, 66, was arrested in NY after he arrived on an overseas flight, according to NBC News.

In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida to state charges of soliciting and procuring a person under age 18 for prostitution.

He avoided federal charges with a possible life sentence and instead was sentenced to 13 months in jail. Acosta, now US Secretary of Labour, allegedly failed to clear the agreement with many of Epstein's 30 alleged victims, who said they would have opposed the 13-month sentence Epstein ultimately served.

The Miami Herald published an investigation a year ago of the reported collaboration between federal prosecutors and Epstein's lawyers. Acosta reportedly oversaw the agreement and has since defended the plea deal as appropriate under the circumstances.

Epstein escaped serious federal charges on his alleged proclivities in 2007, but it seems the chickens have come home to roost.

It was not immediately clear whether the cases involved the same victims since almost all have remained anonymous.

Sasse, who is chairman of the Senate Judiciary Oversight Subcommittee, has "repeatedly pressed the Department of Justice to make sure that Epstein pays for his horrendous crimes".

At least 40 underage girls were brought into Epstein's Palm Beach mansion for what turned into sexual encounters.

Epstein reportedly will be charged with trafficking and conspiracy to traffic minors for sex.at his homes on the Upper East Side of NY and in Palm Beach, Fla.
