Late Lorch goal stuns Salah and Africa Cup of Nations hosts Egypt

Egypt got knocked out of the 2019 AFCON following an unexpected 1-0 defeat against South Africa.

The two teams have meet 11 times with South Africa recording six victories compared to Egypt's four wins and one game ended in a stalemate.

South Africa will face arch-rivals Nigeria, who eliminated holders Cameroon earlier Saturday, in the quarter-finals. Subscribe to our SMS sports service by texting "SPORTS" to 22840.

South Africa will be without winger Themba Zwane, who is expected to serve a suspension against the North African giants.

Bafana Bafana (The Boys) had been woeful in all three Group D matches, barely troubling rival defences, and the public and media slammed the negative tactics of coach Stuart Baxter.

Shah and Ali Khil refused to throw in the towel, though, frustrating the West Indies attack with a 133-run partnership. Dawlat Zadran claimed 2-73 for Afghanistan who were sloppy on the field, dropping catch and missing run-out chance.

No one gave Bafana Bafana a chance to win this one, but incredibly a side that scored just one goal to get through to the Round of 16 is now in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations. Goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawi had to be alert to deny him on two occasions, palming away his shot from the edge of the area before pulling off an even better save to tip his curling free-kick over the crossbar.

Thembinkosi Lorch netted the decisive goal five minutes from time after finishing off a neatly-worked breakaway, with Egypt paying the price of their defensive frailties as they needlessly poured forward en masse to settle the tie before extra time.

South Africa were looking the likelier side to break the deadlock and a courageous block by Ayman Ashraf foiled Lorch.

South Africa captain Thulani Hlatshwayo headed just wide as he darted on to a free kick with 20 minutes remaining.

Egypt state that manager Javier Aguirre has opted to leave Salah out of his team's session to ensure that his "condition will not worsen", with reports indicating that he is suffering from illness.
