Netherlands defeat Sweden to reach World Cup Semi-final

After finishing third in their group at the 2015 World Cup, the Oranje suddenly have a chance to hold the titles of European champions and world champions at the same time - and against all the odds.

Both sides are managed by women, Sarina Wiegman coaching the Dutch and Jill Ellis leading the U.S. Of the 24 teams competing at the World Cup, only nine were coached by women.

Sweden and England will be taking on each other in the 3rd/4th place match on July 6.

Win or lose, Sunday's final will complete a historic two-year run for the Dutch women, who surprised their continental peers at the 2017 European Championships and then qualified for only their second Women's World Cup.

The 29-year-old Jakobsson was at the heart of all that was good about Sweden's forward play, putting Blackstenius through early on only for her compatriot to hit straight at the goalkeeper.

The Netherlands plays Sweden in their semifinals matchup on Wednesday at 3 p.m. In 1974, when I was 15 and I watched Holland v West Germany [in the men's World Cup final], that was one of the greatest footballing experiences of my life.

The best chance of the first half fell to Sweden midfielder Lina Hurtig, who had the ball bounce to her following a corner kick, but her shot was kicked away by Netherlands goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal. "We'll do everything in our power to try to do that".

The Swedes were on the front foot in the early exchanges of the second stanza and they nearly found the breakthrough two minutes before the hour-mark as Nilla Fischer rattled the frame of the goal from close range.

It was the crossbar that denied the Dutch in the 64th minute when a header from Vivianne Miedema was pushed onto the frame by Lindahl's fingertips.

Sweden and the Netherlands will meet in the Women's World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Décines-Charpieu, France. "A feeling of emptiness really", said Sweden manager Peter Gerhardsson after the game. It's easy. As a player, you always want to play the biggest game of your career and this is one of the biggest ones I hopefully am going to play. "Hopefully we can show all our qualities against the United States".

The USA are through to their third successive World Cup final after edging out England 2-1 on Tuesday. The reigning European champions were undefeated coming into the semifinal at Stade de Lyon, while Sweden lost 0-2 to the United States in the group stage, reports Efe news. "I can't even believe it yet".
