Trump says 'did not send that message' to Tehran warning of attack

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have intensified after the United States rolled out a new round of sanctions on Monday targeting Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and some senior officials, days after the downing of a us military surveillance drone by Iran.

Trump told reporters the sanctions were in part a response to last week's downing of a United States drone by Iran, but would have happened regardless.

President Donald Trump says he doesn't want war with Iran but that if there is one, "it won't last very long" because the US has military superiority. "And I'm not talking boots on the ground", Trump said amid acute tensions between the two countries.

Iran has warned that new United States sanctions targeting its supreme leader mean "closing the doors of diplomacy" between Tehran and Washington as President Hassan Rouhani derided the White House as being "afflicted by mental retardation".

US President Donald Trump has boasted that a military confrontation with Iran would be a quick affair, but also said that this is something he doesn't want.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the nation would not "give up" over insults.

The Trump administration is pushing for Iran to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons, and President Trump himself said over the weekend that he "look [s] forward to the day when sanctions can be finally lifted and Iran can become a peaceful, prosperous and productive nation".

American President Donald Trump threatened on Tuesday to obliterate parts of Iran if it attacked "anything American".

He said the Trump administration should de-escalate tensions by stopping "its military adventurism" in the region, withdrawing its "naval armada" and moving away from "economic warfare against the Iranian people".

Sanctions against foreign minister Mohmmad Javad Zarif are expected later this week. "Sadly, the thing they do understand is Strength and Power, and the US is by far the most powerful Military Force in the world", he added.

Iranian Ambassador Majid Takht Ravanchi called the new sanctions another indication of "US hostility" toward the Iranian people.

The US has said it would continue to "impose maximum pressure" against Iran till the regime gives up its "destabilising ambitions" of expanding its nuclear programme. Iran said the drone had flown into its airspace. "Today's action follows a series of aggressive behaviors by the Iranian regime in recent weeks including shooting down of USA drones". "India wants the situation to de-escalate and will urge Iran and USA to de-escalate", they said.

He said that European signatories to the nuclear deal had not done enough to save it.

Tehran will "resolutely" abandon all commitments it made in the 2015 nuclear deal on 7 July, Iran state news reported on Tuesday, according to a top security official.
