Trump signs order imposing sanctions on Iran supreme leader

The escalation of tensions comes more than a year after Trump pulled the USA out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and reapplied heavy economic and diplomatic pressure against the country.

"Are there any other sanctions left for the U.S.to impose on Iran?" ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said Monday, according to the official Islamic Republic News Agency.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Under the sanctions, any foreign institution that does business with Iran's central bank or other banks in the country loses access to the United States financial system.

"The Supreme Leader of Iran is the one who is ultimately responsible for the hostile conduct of the regime", Mr Trump said.

Donald Trump has called on countries to protect their own ships from Iran as they pass through the Strait of Hormuz, saying that U.S. troops do not "even need to be" in the Gulf.

Trump seeks to drive Iranian oil exports to zero to force Tehran to abandon support for militant groups in the Middle East and renegotiate the 2015 nuclear accord the USA quit a year ago.

US Special Representative on Iran Brian Hook told reporters that the United States was looking to agree a treaty that would be ratified by the US Congress, saying the 2015 nuclear accord between Iran and world powers was flawed because it had no legal basis.

He said, "I look forward to the day when sanctions can be lifted and Iran can be a peace-loving nation".

At the height of the Iran-Iraq war in 1987, the US Navy began escorting Kuwaiti vessels through the Gulf as both sides of the conflict threatened shipping lanes in the region.

The Riviera Beach virus is said to have been unleashed when someone in the police department opened a tainted email on May 29. He said in nearly all cases, the attackers decrypt the computers after payment, allowing the victims to retrieve their data.

Iran has denied responsibility for the attacks. Iran has denied the accusation.

Attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz ensued, and the USA accused Iran.

Later, Trump said the sanctions would have been imposed regardless of the incident over the drone.

Amir Ali Hajizadeh, a high-ranking officer in the IRGC, said another military aircraft, carrying 35 passengers, had been flying close to the drone.

"I know many Iranians living in NY, and they're fantastic people", Trump stated. Earlier sanctions were enforced on some of Iran's major exports, including crude oil, its chief source of revenue, and its banking and financial sectors. US officials have not offered comments on the issue.

The Houthi rebels claimed they used bomb-laden drones in the attack on the Abha airport, the second in less than two weeks.

"We'll be talking with them about how to make sure that we are all strategically aligned and how we can build out a global coalition", Pompeo said.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks to the media at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., Sunday, June 23, 2019, before boarding a plane headed to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Pompeo flew to the U.S. allies on Monday, meeting with Abu Dhabi's bin Zayed.

Pompeo wrote on Twitter that he had a "productive meeting" with King Salman and discussed "heightened tensions in the region and the need to promote maritime security" in the Strait of Hormuz near the Persian Gulf, through which roughly a fifth of the world's traded oil passes.
