Subban, Marleau trades overshadow 2nd day of National Hockey League draft

With the addition of Subban and center Jack Hughes, the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, the Devils have a bright fantasy outlook for years to come.

The Predators initially acquired Subban in 2016 in a blockbuster move that saw then captain, Shea Weber sent to the Montreal Canadiens in return for Subban.

For the second time in three years, the big-personality defenceman and former Norris Trophy victor has been traded.

Soon after P.K. Subban was traded to the New Jersey Devils from the Nashville Predators on Saturday, the defenceman took to social media to thank the Predators organization, his teammates and fans.

New Jersey surrendered blue-liners Steven Santini and Jeremy Davies in an exchange that gives Nashville salary cap relief.

The Predators are not retaining any salary in the deal, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.

"We had to make a business decision". Toronto surrendered a protected 2020 first-round pick to get Carolina to take on the contract of 39-year-old forward Patrick Marleau, who has a $6.25 million cap hit for next season.

"We appreciate P.K.'s contribution to the Predators and the Nashville community over the past three seasons", Poile said in a press release.

Davies was a seventh-round pick of the Devils in the 2016 draft but instead went to college and spent the last three seasons playing for Northeastern. But he is coming off a season in which injuries limited him to nine goals and 22 assists in 63 games. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder posted 1-3-4 totals in 39 games this past season with the Devils and had 5-16-21 totals in 114 career National Hockey League games.
