NY Gov. Cuomo Signs Bill Granting Driver's Licenses to Illegal Immigrants

NY Gov. Cuomo Signs Bill Granting Driver's Licenses to Illegal Immigrants

The bill passed the state Senate early Wednesday morning and was expected to pass the Assembly later in the day.

Cuomo signed the bill even after he asked the state's civil attorney, Solicitor General Barbara Underwood, to look at the bill for any legal weaknesses.

Now all that's missing is Gov. Andrew Cuomo's signature.

Gov. Cuomo has previously stated he supports such a bill, but on Monday voiced concerns of agencies targeting new license holders based on their immigration status.

If the Green Light Bill becomes law, legislators say undocumented immigrants will have to follow the same requirements as all licensed drivers in NY, including having auto insurance.

Many Republicans in NY opposed the measure, which was passed after Republican President Donald Trump moved to crack down on illegal immigration on several fronts.

"It's not about giving someone a driver's license who's gonna try to get citizenship. If this bill is enacted and challenged in court, we will vigorously defend it", she tweeted.

"It's been an 18-year struggle", immigration rights activist Javier Valdés told the Times.

Under the proposal, NY would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 85% by 2050 and allocate funds for communities impacted by climate change.

'Gov. Cuomo has supported this policy for over a decade, ' Cuomo's counsel, Alphonso David, said in a statement announcing his intentions.

"This is not about driver's licenses, this is about law and order and the United States" right to defend the sanctity and sovereignty of our borders, ' said Sen.

The law would allow those who are not in the USA legally to obtain a New York driver's license at the cost of the taxpayer, CBS New York reported. "The key to this bill is not the political intent but the legal effect". Lawmakers initially reversed the practice in 2008 to comply with federal ID laws, then backtracked and voted to reinstate licenses for undocumented immigrants in 2013. We hope the attorney general's assessment is correct'.

Cuomo has already set ambitious emission reduction targets, but the bill would codify them in state law, making it harder for future administrations to weaken. The protest came in the wake of a sweeping DMV crackdown on individuals without Social Security numbers.

Supporters said the move would make roads safer and lead to less hit-and-run accidents and encourage more drivers to purchase auto insurance. Eliot Spitzer's 2007 push for "illegal licenses", and a Siena College poll recently found that 53 percent of New Yorkers oppose it, with just 41 percent in favor.
