Lionel Messi bitter about Colombia defeat in Copa America opener

Messi, who turns 32 later this month and is running out of chances to lift a trophy with his country, had warned that Argentina were far from favorites to win this Copa America after losing the finals in 2015 and 2016 to Chile on penalties.

Lionel Messi has urged his Argentina team-mates to put out of their minds the 2-0 loss to Colombia in the Copa America on Saturday.

Despite being blessed with world-class players for the last four decades, Argentina has not won a major tournament since 1993, with the current crop of stars, including Lionel Messi, coming under fire for failing to consistently translate their excellent club form to the global stage.

He had been in fine form for Argentina, scoring the winning goal to beat Switzerland in the last 16.

However, defeat would not rule out Argentina from progressing as they could still go through as one of the two best third placed team to earn a quarter-final place.

Roger Martinez and Duvan Zapata scored in the final 20 minutes after an Argentina side featuring Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero had dominated.

Unlike against Argentina, Colombia will have most of the ball and be expected to punch holes in a Qatar side that are likely to try and soak up pressure and hit on the break.

That triggered Argentina, who nearly took the lead after Nicolas Otamendi's powerful header forced Ospina into a low diving save, while Messi was unable to head home the rebound with the goal at his mercy.

And four minutes from time, Martinez found overlapping full-back Jefferson Lerma, another substitute, and his left-wing cross was stabbed home from close in by Zapata. After last year's World Cup last-16 exit and Messi's brief worldwide absence, the South American giants have a lot of work ahead.

Both players have dominated football in the past decade, but Messi has been criticised for failing to deliver on the global stage.

To make it even harder for Argentina, the Paraguayan defence is likely to be boosted by the return of Palmeiras defender Gustavo Gomez, who was suspended for the first match against Qatar.

This time around, with the responsibility of leading a group of young players in the Copa America, he showed optimism despite the setback.
