King Arthur Flour issues recall over possible E. coli contamination

King Arthur Flour is recalling 14,218 cases of five-pound King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour due to the potential presence of E. coli, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said late Thursday.

Flour sold directly through King Arthur's catalog, website and retail store in Norwich is not included in the recall.

"The recalled Unbleached All-Purpose Flour (5 lb.) was distributed through retailers and distributors nationwide", the company said.

Customers with questions are asked to call the King Arthur Flour Consumer Hotline seven days a week/24 hours a day at 866-797-9178.

That's almost 114,000 bags of King Arthur Flour.

King Arthur Flour has been recalled for possible E. coli contamination. No illnesses had been directly linked to the King Arthur brand flour as of the posting of the recall today.

This post was updated on June 15 to include information about ADM Milling Co.'s previous recall.

Some kinds of E. coli cause illness by producing Shiga toxin. We are committed to educating and reminding consumers that flour is not ready-to-eat, and anything made with flour must be baked before eating.

The agency also urges those who purchased the recalled flour to either discard it or return it to local stores for a credit or refund. Most people with HUS recover within a few weeks, but some suffer permanent damage or die.

"HUS can occur in people of any age but is most common in children under 5 years old, older adults and persons with weakened immune systems".
