Investor wealth soars Rs 5.33 lakh cr post exit polls results

Buoyed by exit poll results, the Sensex rose 1,421 points or 3.75 per cent to close at 39,352, posting its highest single-day gain in the last ten years.

Modi's main rival is Rahul Gandhi, 48, of the Congress party, the scion of India's famed Nehru-Gandhi dynasty.

In the recent past, exit polls have proved to be globally unreliable.

By Monday evening, a "bulk SMS" attributed to Gandhi was sent to journalists covering the Congress. 'Thank you for participating and expressing your right in India's democracy. Only Sahara DRS and Star News Cvoter surveys placed NDA beyond the half-way mark of 272 seats.

"Let us now wait for May 23".

However, three exit polls including one by former MP L. Rajagopal projected victory for the TDP. The mood in the Congress headquarters, on Monday, certainly would suggest so.

The opposition Congress party was predicted to double its 2014 tally of 44 seats - a historic low since India's independence in 1947 - but still fall far short of a claim to power.

While opposition parties refused to concede, most media polls said the BJP and its allies would secure enough seats to form a new government after the world's biggest election, which began on April 11 and ended on Sunday.

Pollsters say Modi remains personally popular but his party's overall majority is at risk from a backlash against the government. Exit polls , though, are not completely accurate and have a mixed record in a country with an electorate of 900 million people.

Some have taken a more cautiously optimistic stand. "Sometimes exit polls tend to be wrong and the results point towards a different trend but when all the exit polls indicate same thing, it will be a shocker if the real results will be different", said Panda.

Ever since it became a makeshift office of Indira Gandhi's breakaway Congress (I) faction over four decades ago, and then cemented its position as an iconic political landmark as headquarters of the Indian National Congress, 24, Akbar Road has seen its fair share of electoral crests and troughs.

"The artificially engineered or manufactured Modi wave is being used by the BJP to lure regional parties well in advance to fill any shortfall after the results on May 23", said a miffed Kumaraswamy in a series of tweets.

Bhubaneswar: The BJP, which is eyeing power in Odisha, is likely to make huge strides and better performance in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Odisha, if one goes by the exit poll predictions.

BJP party chief Amit Shah has invited alliance partners for a dinner meeting on Tuesday to discuss the formation of the new government, two party sources said. The accuracy of the Indian exit polls is to be seen, and Modi supporters will be hoping that the PM indeed emerges victorious and holds office for another term.

Exit polls indicated more than 65 percent of India's 900 million eligible voters turned out over six-week election.

# The Election Commission has announced re-polling in one polling station under Kolkata North parliamentary constituency on Wednesday. In fact, the average of five major surveys predicted 260 seats for the BJP-led front and 188 for the UPA.
