The Eiffel Tower has been evacuated after a man tried to scale it.

The district near the Eiffel Tower is now cordoned off and secured by the police. Footage from the scene shows a man scaling the tower.

There is a police cordon in place and visitors are advised to stay away while the incident is ongoing.

Visitors were previously not allowed to leave the site until the incident was resolved. They posted to social media impromptu video they recorded of a climber near the top of the 324-meter (1,063-foot) tower.

The mayor went on to roast Trump - firing off a series of barbs. "I know how to take him on - I've been watching him for decades". De Blasio has not shied away from criticizing Trump on issues like climate change, immigration and policing.

In a later tweet, Murphy added: "We are being told a guy paid in and then started to climb from the second floor #EiffelTower". The lockdown began around 2:15 p.m. local time, CNN reported. The ordeal comes days after the city of Paris celebrated the Eiffel Tower's 130th anniversary.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience". "We have to stop the person, and in that case we evacuate the tower".

Designed by Parisian engineer Gustave Eiffel and built for the 1889 Universal Exhibition, the structure rises 324m above the French capital. Roughly six million people visit the tower every year.
