One killed and at least seven wounded in United States school shooting

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office confirmed late on Tuesday (local time) that Devon Erickson, 18, was taken into custody after the shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Denver.

Douglas County Coroner Jill Romann has not officially identified the deceased student, according to Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

The Highlands Ranch is a charter school in an affluent suburb and is only five miles from Columbine High School in Littleton where one of America's worst school shootings took place 20 years ago.

Sheriff Tony Spurlock had earlier said several of the eight wounded students were in critical condition, including some in surgery.

Castillo lunged to tackle him, she said, "giving all of us enough time to get underneath our desks, to get ourselves safe, and to run across the room, to escape".

"We originally thought that we had a juvenile male in custody, but through our interviews yesterday afternoon, we determined that we have a juvenile female in custody now", Spurlock said, reported KOAA.

He said it was not surprising to him that Kendrick was said to have charged one of the shooters as they entered a classroom.

It was unclear Wednesday if Erickson had legal representation ahead of an initial hearing in his case, which will happen later today.

She did not know the ages of the victims or whether they were students at the school, which combines elementary, middle and high school classes on one campus.

The television station cited anonymous sources close to the investigation.

Over the previous 48 hours, four Israelis were killed as dozens of rockets slammed into urban areas of Israel's south. It also deployed tanks and infantry forces to the Gaza frontier, and put another brigade on standby.

Three children remain in intensive care in area hospitals, Spurlock said.

The shooting comes after the state marked the 20th anniversary of the Columbine massacre, last month.

The first response to that question came from Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, who said, "We've been no stranger to tragedy", adding that the people in Colorado have shown they're resilient in the face of catastrophes and deadly shootings. All other Highlands Ranch schools were placed on lockout, the school districts said.

Authorities say the two students accused of killing a classmate in a shooting at a school in suburban Denver used at least two handguns in the attack.

"I heard a gunshot", said Makai Dixon, 8, a second grader who had been training for this moment, with active shooter drills and lockdowns, since he was in kindergarten.

Police revealed this morning that the younger suspect in the shooting at The Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) School Highlands Ranch was a girl aged under 18.

Frantic parents have told how their children sent them texts and called them to tell them that shots had been fired.

Mr. Spurlock said the suspects were armed and unhurt.

"Thank God he is fine", Montoya said. "He's going to walk out on his feet".
