Though they hit the bar through Paul Pogba in the closing minutes, United couldn't regain the lead against their already-relegated opponents.

United are scheduled to play a preseason friendly against Tottenham in Shanghai on July 25 but there remains a possibility their Europa League campaign could now start on the same date.

The result caps a miserable season for United, who have slumped again after an initial upturn in form following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's arrival in place of Jose Mourinho.

Solksjaer left Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial out of the matchday squad, with Alexis Sanchez handed a starting place.

United has just one win in its last five league games, as the club went from possibly the favorite to finish fourth to now unlikely to get there.

United's chances of reaching next season's Champions League are hanging by a thread.
