LA County Health Officials Investigate Measles Outbreak

This is the second-greatest number of cases reported in the US since measles was eliminated in 2000, second only to the 667 cases reported during all of 2014.

A CDC spokesman said Tuesday that the agency is expecting the number of cases in 2019 to exceed 2014, when there were 667 cases.

She says it's important for residents who have not been vaccinated against the measles to get their shots, and make sure their children are vaccinated.

Nationally, the United States has high measles vaccination coverage.

He says if people stay unvaccinated, the measles could continue to spread. Generally, preschool children, adolescents, young adults and inadequately immunized individuals comprise the majority of measles cases.

Public health officials, especially in New York City, have said they expect the number of measles cases to increase in the next week because people traveled and spent time with extended family during Easter and Passover.

Measles, a serious viral respiratory illness, can live up to two hours in the air or on the surface after an infected person coughs or sneezes.

"Measles is so contagious that if one person has it, up to 90% of the people close to that person who are not immune will also become infected", according to the CDC.

As we approach National Infant Immunization Week on April 27, 2019, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wants to underscore its continued confidence in the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines. "After just one dose of MMR vaccine about 95 per cent of people will be protected from measles, and 99 per cent of people who have had both MMR doses will be protected from measles", Shoemack said.

Adults should be vaccinated with at least one dose of MMR vaccine, with a second dose recommended for those at higher risk, such as global travelers and health care workers.

Caplan said the federal government could take some steps to keep these kinds of infectious diseases from spreading, including ending laws that allow parents to not vaccinate their children for "religious" reasons, given that mainstream religions don't oppose them. The clinic offers a series of vaccines suggested by the CDC as well as required vaccines for public school admission.

All children should receive two doses of measles immunization. However, in 2019, instead of celebrating public health successes, we are losing ground. Anyone planning to travel internationally, should make sure they are protected against measles and other unsafe diseases before they go overseas.

The best prevention against measles is getting two doses of an MMR vaccine.

"The MMR vaccine is very safe and effective", the CDC said.

A vocal fringe of parents in the United States oppose vaccines, believing, contrary to scientific evidence, that ingredients in them can cause autism.
