Almost $1bn raised to rebuild Notre Dame cathedral

Firefighters declared success Tuesday in a more than 12-hour battle to extinguish an inferno engulfing Paris' iconic Notre Dame cathedral that claimed its spire and roof, but spared its bell towers and the purported Crown of Christ.

Bishop Patrick Chauvet acknowledged that the famed monument would close down for "five to six years" as he spoke with local business owners Wednesday, two days after a blaze torched the roof of the cathedral and brought down its spire.

French football club Toulouse will have the image of the Notre Dame cathedral on their shirts for their Champions Cup semi-final against Leinster this weekend, the president announced. "The majesty of Notre Dame - the history, artistry, and spirituality - took our breath away, lifting us to a higher understanding of who we are and who we can be", she tweeted. "And we can do it".

"What we saw last night in Paris was our capacity to mobilize and to unite", Macron said, hailing France as a nation of "builders".

As many as 50 investigators are working on the case but are not allowed to enter the cathedral yet for safety reasons, he said.

Images from inside the cathedral Tuesday showed its enormous walls standing proud, with statues still in place and a gleaming golden cross above the altar.

A church community in Northumberland County is reflecting on the massive fire that tore through Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Monday as it has a very personal connection to how the people of Paris are feeling today.

Deputy Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the structure was in good condition "overall" but that "some vulnerabilities" had been identified in the stone vaults and the remainder of the ceiling.

It took about 500 firefighters nearly 15 hours to completely extinguish the blaze at the 850-year-old structure.

Notre Dame's three "irreplaceable" Rose Windows, which date to the 13th century and were feared to have melted or exploded, were also intact.

Tina Hailey told the publication she was rounding the corner when she heard a woman screaming, "Oh my god, pray for my son". It opened in 1992, has more than 520 stores and is visited by 40 million visitors annually, according to its website.

"The end of the fire doesn't mean the edifice is totally saved".

Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, said in a statement that first responders and city workers "formed a human chain" to recover any relics that could be saved from the cathedral.

"I hope we'll be able to rebuild".

Germany and Poland were among the countries that offered assistance.

Consultant Patrick Palem (R) checks statues that were removed from the spire of Paris' Notre-Dame Cathedral in a workshop at the Socra company for restoration work in Marsac-sur-L'Isle, France, April 16, 2019.

But experts had warned a full restoration will take many years.

"If it were me, I'd want the memory", she said.

While St. Boniface Cathedral was never restored to its former stature, Carriere also feels the global significance of Notre Dame will ensure it is rebuilt on a similar scale to the burned structure.

Many more came Tuesday to the banks of the river Seine to gaze at where the roof and steeple once stood.
