Trump says America must win race to build 5G

The U.S. government will hold a massive auction to bolster 5G service, the next generation of mobile networks, and plans to spend $20 billion to expand broadband access in rural areas.

The next 5G spectrum auction, it said, will be "the largest airwaves auction ever held in the United States".

"We want Americans to be the first to benefit from this new digital revolution", Pai said.

"As you probably heard, we had another alternative of doing it, that would be through government investment, and leading through the government, we don't want to do that because it won't be almost as good, almost as fast", Trump said.

To pay for it, Pai said the agency plans to repurpose money from the Universal Service Fund.

"American companies must lead the world in cellular technology", he said. Is the Administration promising to provide new money for rural broadband through existing authority, or is the Administration going to need to ask Congress to provide new money?

"It also makes no sense in relation to competition with China - these are different markets in different phases of development".

Since November 2018, the FCC has auctioned 1,550 megahertz of spectrum for use by commercial wireless providers.

On Friday, the United States FCC has announced that it will take a couple of measures to expedite the development of 5G in the US.

The proposed new regulations would allow “Fixed Satellite Service operators to provide faster, more advanced services to their customers” by employing a 50 GHz band.

Last week, South Korea became the first country to switch on a nationwide 5G network as the country's three wireless carriers announced the launch of their commercial service in 85 cities.

The airwave auction will be held on December 10.

The FCC voted on Friday to seek comments on bidding procedures for the next auction.

"The idea of state-designed and -operated 5G networks in the USA makes no sense on its own terms".

The latest Ericsson Mobility Report indicates that almost half of the mobile subscriptions in North America will be 5G by 2023.

It will take years to roll out, and the highest data speeds and capacities may not reach rural areas at all.

Pai was among a group of USA officials who, at an industry conference in February, pressured allies to stop using wireless networking gear from Chinese firms such as Huawei over fears that the equipment could enable Chinese eavesdropping.

Pai said Friday he is committed to making airwaves of all types a priority.
