He said: "I am told enough of the referendum doubters are close to folding, partly because the advantages of Labour rebranding as the people's vote vanguard in the forthcoming European parliamentary and council elections would be very significant".

The officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the closed-door negotiations.

European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted that an agreement on an extension had been reached late Wednesday night.

May said nothing was more pressing or vital than delivering Brexit, and emphasized that she wanted Britain to ratify an exit deal as quickly as possible to avoid taking part in European Parliament elections on May 23.

Three years ago "Brits abroad" were blocked from voting in the referendum; this was an outrageous decision from the British government because it effectively meant that those Britons who would be most affected by Brexit were unable to vote in the all important referendum.

But with United Kingdom lawmakers expressing an unwillingness to endorse the Brexit deal that May has forged with the bloc, preparation for European Union election campaign has begun in order to fill 73 British seats in the 751-seat European Union legislature.

May's own authority has been gravely compromised by the long Brexit ordeal and she has promised to step down once Britain leaves the bloc - if efforts to get rid of her more quickly do not bear fruit.

This is the second extension to the Brexit deadline after the original leaving date of March 29 was delayed until April 12.

Even though May technically has until October 31, other dates before then could play into the UK's departure.

France could offer Julian Assange political asylum
But Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the expected battle over Assange's possible extradition would not involve Australia. President Donald Trump has consistently shifted his opinions on WikiLeaks and the organization's founder, Julian Assange.

The idea of a new referendum was among several Brexit alternatives to Prime Minister Theresa May's deal that were put to lawmakers in the last month but which all fell short of a majority in parliament.

May retorted: "I think you know the answer to that".

"This second extension in the space of a fortnight represents not only a diplomatic failure, but is another milestone in the government's mishandling of the entire Brexit process", he said.

She said: "We need to resolve this".

Other candidates for the Brexit Party include Annunziata Rees-Mogg, sister of pro-Brexit Conservative lawmaker Jacob Rees-Mogg.

"UKIP would introduce the separation of prisoners or prisons exclusively for Islamic prisoners who promote extremism or try to convert non-Islamic prisoners", the manifesto said.

"It is no secret that the Labour leader has ducked and dived on the issue of a second European Union referendum, but at this crucial crossroads it is high time Jeremy Corbyn commits to putting a second referendum on the table as the only way forward".

Hammond said that while the government was opposed to a new public vote, other Labour demands - such as a customs union with the EU - were up for debate.
