Magic Johnson's complete interview about stepping down from Lakers

NBA superstar LeBron James was allegedly "stunned" when he discovered Magic Johnson announced Tuesday that he was resigning as Lakers president of basketball operations.

"We're just happy", she told the outlet.

Johnson told The Los Angeles Times, "That story is wrong. That annoyed him. You've got Rob Pelinka, the general manager, pivotal in all this, because he was the individual who was talked about at Lakers facilities constantly joking around asking the question 'Where's Magic?' - to bring attention to the fact that Magic Johnson was perceived as being an absentee executive". Serena Williams called me a week ago and said, 'Will you mentor me and be on my advisory board?' And I said, yeah, I want to do that. "I want to go back to who I was before taking on this job".

League rules prevent Johnson from publicly commenting on opposing players or pending free agents.

As the Lakers move toward the future with recently acquired team member Lebron James, Johnson said has no regrets about his time with the organization.

"It did shock me, like it did the rest of the world, but this is what's best for him", said Lonzo Ball, who was Johnson's first draft pick at No. 2 overall in 2017. I honestly didn't question it one bit. "He made a business, and sounds like a personal, decision".

The Lakers end the 2018-19 campaign with a 37-45 record, missing the playoffs for a sixth consecutive year.

The Lakers are clearly in a major state of dysfunction at the moment and have a ton of decisions to make moving forward.

Walton participated in exit meetings with players Wednesday, sources told Shelburne. He reportedly has one guaranteed year remaining on his contract with a team option for 2020-21. Johnson saying himself that he was not enjoying his life in this role and wanted to go back to being an ambassador of the game.
