Although the exiled leader remains a hugely popular speaker, he has cut back on his global engagements and has not met a world leader since 2016.

The Dalai Lama has warned that apart from a reincarnation recognised through legitimate methods, no recognition or acceptance should be given to a candidate chosen for political reasons by anyone, including China.

The Dalai Lama, who was diagnosed with a chest infection after being admitted to hospital on Tuesday, complaining of discomfort, will spend a few days in hospital, his personal secretary said.

"He was brought to Max Hospital yesterday with a case of chest infection".

"His condition is stable now".

The 14th Dalai Lama had fled to India in early 1959 to escape from the Chinese occupation and lives in exile in the hill town of Dharamshala.
