Dallas reports first confirmed measles case since 2017 | Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Ottawa Public Health is urging people to take precautions following a confirmed case of measles in the city, and is working with area health-care providers and hospitals to contact individuals and families who may have been exposed to the infectious case.

The statewide total of 39 measles cases is the highest since 65 cases were reported in 1991.

Meanwhile, in southeast MI, the Oakland County Health Department is hosting a special measles vaccination clinic for the public on Saturday, April 6 from 11 1 the South Oaklanfield Health Center in Southfield. The virus can live in droplets in the air up to two hours after an infected person has coughed or sneezed.

Earlier this week two babies aged 8 months and 11 months who were too young to be vaccinated contracted the disease.

A second vaccine dose is given before the start of kindergarten, between ages 4 and 6 years.

In January Washington state's governor, Jay Inslee, declared a state of emergency after officials confirmed 31 cases of measles. It is rare in the USA due to the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Despite this, Lynn Sutfin, a spokesperson for the MDHHS, told the Free Press that at least three of the recent cases had documentation of the recommended two doses of the MMR vaccine.

As of March 28, there have been 387 confirmed cases of the potentially serious illness this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Individuals born before 1957 are presumed to be immune to measles.

Initial symptoms include a fever, fatigue, runny nose, moist cough and sore, red eyes.

While most people don't experience side effects from receiving the MMR vaccine, some may get a mild fever or redness, swelling, or pain at the injection site, Ryan said.

A rash that is red, raised, blotchy; usually starts on face, spreads to trunk, arms, and legs 3-5 days after symptoms begin.

"Measles is so contagious that if one person has it, up to 90 percent of the people close to that person who are not immune will also become infected", the website states.

On 26 March, Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock called for new legislation to force social media companies to remove content promoting false information about vaccines.
