Amazon slashing prices at Whole Foods this week

The Seattle retail giant touted a round of price cuts immediately after buying Whole Foods in August 2017 and over the a year ago worked to roll out grocery delivery from store locations and introduce discounts for Amazon Prime members. Amazon, which bought Whole Foods for nearly $14 billion in 2017, previously had boosted prices earlier this year because of inflation.

Shoppers will save at least 20 percent on hundreds of items with an emphasis on organic produce, the company said in a news release.

Amazon is cutting prices at Whole Foods starting this week.

Over the next few months, Whole Foods said it will roll out more than 300 Prime member deals on popular seasonal items.

Despite this effort, a bombshellWall Street Journal report in February found that Whole Foods prices were actually climbing, something the retailer blamed on increasing inflation.

Amazon acquired Whole Foods in 2017 for $13.7 billion. And organic bunched rainbow chard is down to $1.99.

This time around could be different, however, Grom said, noting that prices on hundreds of items have been slashed, making the latest cuts more "material" than in the past. This includes 35% off all Justin's brand products, 40% off all Kite Hill plant-based products, and a 20% reduction for all prepared sandwiches and wraps.

Mackey added that the company will continue to focus on lowering prices.

Whole Foods is pushing back prices once again. The newspaper also reported the news of the current price cuts earlier Monday.

Since Whole Foods Market joined Amazon the companies have launched exclusive Prime member savings, as well as two-hour delivery on Whole Foods groceries for Prime members in 60 metro areas, grocery pickup in as little as 30-minutes at select Whole Foods Market locations, shopping via the Alexa voice-activated digital assistant, and Amazon Lockers in Whole Foods Market stores.
