Liverpool back atop Premier League with 2-1 win at Fulham

Liverpool jumped above Manchester City to take top spot in the Premier League but needed a James Milner penalty nine minutes from time to see off lowly Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Van Dijk has been lavished with praise for his performances this season, so he will have to take the criticism for his part in Fulham's equaliser on the chin. "I should have handled it better", admitted Van Dijk.

Recent links with Real Madrid in the Mirror will rightly be a worry for Guradiola as he looks to continue to build his City squad but they do highlight just how far the Jamaican born star has come over the last 12 months. "We don't know how important that goal could be".

The forward is also just one goal away from 50 Premier League goals for Liverpool, and he could become the quickest ever player to reach that feat for the club should he find the back of the net in one of his next four league games.

"And that's it. You've got to have the belief that you can go on and win it".

"People will say we need to be more convincing, but we are at the start of a development, not the end". We could've finished it off in the second-half but if you don't kill the game at 1-0 up, it's clear something like that can happen.

"Babel was there that is how football is".

"In most of the draws we had, we were closer to winning the game, and that gives us confidence to go for it and do the right things". Obviously beating Burnley at home was hard, as they are in a similar position to Fulham, and we fell behind there. "Average game, sensational result". Top is the best position to be in.

We can not be entirely sure what Babel was referring to, but it turns out that even the great Van Dijk struggles to deal with a horribly shanked clearance and a moment of inexplicable goalkeeping indecision.

By contrast, another defeat leaves Fulham 13 points from safety.

"In team sports sometimes you make mistakes and a squad like Liverpool will finish it off".
