Trump Vetoes Congressional Vote Against His Emergency Declaration

Several prominent Senate Republicans stood with the Democrats against the president's emergency declaration, including Marco Rubio (R-FL), Mike Lee (R-UT), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Rand Paul (R-KY).

Trump repeated his view that a crisis existed at the border, called the resolution reckless and said he was proud to veto it. Angel Moms, mothers of children killed by illegal aliens, were also in attendance.

"The president acted well within his discretion in declaring a national emergency concerning the southern border", the Justice Department argues in the letter, a copy of which was reviewed by The Washington Post.

Congressional critics do not appear to have the votes to override Trump's veto.

It is unlikely that Congress will have the two-thirds majority required to override Trump's veto.

The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives had passed the resolution to overturn the emergency last month, and 12 Republicans sided with Democratic Senators to clear the Senate in a 59-41 vote on Thursday afternoon.

Trump expressed pride in the Republicans who did not vote to support the resolution and said later that he had sympathy for those who defied him, adding they did what they had to do.

So it probably shouldn't come as a surprise that Google's dedication would waver in some of its Chrome OS hardware projects. Google's move may be related to feedback it's received for its Pixel Slate and Pixelbook releases.

It is being challenged in court as an unconstitutional usurpation of Congress' power of the purse. That declaration was an effort to circumvent Congress to secure more money for his southern border wall.

The other Republicans who voted to oppose the declaration were Sens. That resolution seeking to end USA backing for the Saudi Arabian-led coalition fighting in Yemen was approved in the aftermath of the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul and is expected to be the subject of Trump's second veto.

The large numbers have put a strain on immigration enforcement, although critics say a wall would do little to discourage the crossings since many of those apprehended at the border turn themselves in voluntarily.

"I think actually a national emergency was designed for a specific objective like this, so we have a great case", Trump said.

The wall was a signature campaign issue for Trump, but he was never able to deliver on his promise to make Mexico pay for it, and the issue languished during his first two years in office.

Trump initiated the showdown months ago when he all but dared Congress not to give him the $5.7 billion he was demanding to build the U.S. -Mexico wall, by threatening a federal government shutdown.
