Passengers evacuate flight to Fort Lauderdale after emergency landing in Newark

A plane forced to make an emergency landing at Newark Airport shut down the busy facility Saturday morning.

Canada's Air Transat Flight 942 was flying from Montreal, Canada to Fort Lauderdale in the US state of Florida and diverted to Newark at around 8:30 a.m. (1330 GMT) after reports of smoke in the cargo hold, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Passengers on board the Boeing 737 - which flew out of Montreal and was bound for Fort Lauderdale, Florida - evacuated onto the airport's runway via emergency slides, according to FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen. They were able to successfully stop, activate their evacuation slides and escape from the plane.

The resident of Beloeil, east of Montreal, said it only took two or three minutes for authorities to arrive and to instruct the passengers to evacuate the plane by jumping onto cushioned mattresses.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

But you can not say it was a game we deserved to lose. "Well we started slow and maybe a backlash from Wednesday". The visitors took a surprise lead in the sixth minute, with Ashley Westwood scoring direct from a corner.

A Newark airport official said that no fire was found but there was a lot of smoke after the aircraft landed. But by 10 a.m., it was reported that flights had resumed, although many were delayed.

The Canadian airline said it will send another plane to get passengers to their destination.

The plane landed safely and the 189 passengers exited through the plane's chutes.

"Our 189 passengers' safety is our top priority and they were evacuated promptly upon landing", said Debbie Cabana, Air Transat marketing director.
