Other area pilots had noted turbulence as well, and pilots at nearby Newark Airport were warning passengers to prepare for turbulence on flights about to depart.

The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey says Turkish Air flight 1 was travelling from Istanbul to NY when it encountered intense turbulence mid-flight and declared an emergency.
