Didn't discuss military drills in meetings with North Korea's Kim

President Donald Trump's nuclear summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (gihm jung oon) ended without a deal, but the White House national security adviser says he doesn't consider that outcome to have been a failure.

Fox News anchor Bret Baier said President Donald Trump's claim that his former lawyer was to blame for scuttling his North Korea summit was a "stretch" on Monday.

"The president's been very clear he viewed what happened to Otto Warmbier as barbaric and unacceptable and I think the best thing North Korea could do right now would be to come up with a full explanation of exactly what happened to him", Bolton said on CNN.

An anonymous Seoul-based researcher on North Korean affairs noted the United States' travel ban preventing Americans from traveling to North Korea is not helping in a crucial need to expose the people to outsiders.

Asked whether that was his view, too, Bolton replied: "The President's view is he gave nothing away".

The summit's collapse followed the leaders' historic meeting in Singapore that produced only a vague commitment from Kim to work "toward complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula".

"It would represent an irreversible stage in North Korea's denuclearization if the Yongbyon nuclear complex including its plutonium reprocessing facilities and uramium enrichment facilities are completely dismantled", Moon told senior aides Monday at a National Security Council meeting discussing the summit. After talks fell apart over the issue of sanctions, Trump told a media conference "sometimes you have to walk".

According to a senior U.S. official, Pyongyang in return offered only to close down "a portion of the Yongbyon complex", a sprawling site covering multiple nuclear facilities - and the North is believed to have other uranium enrichment plants.

Congressman Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, summarised the summit as a "spectacular failure" made all the worse by Trump's comments on "murder of an American citizen, Otto Warmbier". But his call for partial sanctions relief to encourage nuclear disarmament steps by North Korea has caused disagreements with Washington, which does not want to give up what it sees as its main leverage with the North. "I've heard the president talk about Otto Warmbier on any number of occasions in the Oval Office".

The maneuvers have been a perennial target of North Korean fury - condemned by Pyongyang as provocative rehearsals for war.

"Christians have led the way toward bridge building in the last 20-plus years, and the summit can potentially open the border between North and South Korea".

Opponents of scrapping the drills warn that it could affect the combat readiness of US and South Korean forces and hand the North a strategic advantage on the divided peninsula.
