Huawei chairman says Trump's latest message on 5G 'clear and correct'

A global battle between the USA government and Chinese tech company Huawei over allegations that it is a cybersecurity risk will overshadow the opening on Monday of the world's biggest mobile industry trade fair.

"It will delay 5G in Europe by probably two years", he said.

Huawei has grown fast to become the world's biggest maker of telecoms equipment and is embedded in the mobile networks and 5G plans of many European operators.

BARCELONA, Spain-A global battle between the US government and Huawei over allegations that the Chinese tech company is a cybersecurity risk is overshadowing the opening of the world's biggest mobile industry trade fair.

Huawei's counteroffensive includes making its case directly to government officials, companies and journalists.

Speaking at a press conference at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday, Read said that banning the Huawei from Europe's 5G networks could be "hugely disruptive" to national infrastructure and consumers.

"The geopolitical tensions between the United States of America and China will undoubtedly be a hot topic at MWC, particularly in the context of Huawei", said Shaun Collins, CEO of research firm CCS Insight.

Washington considers the matter urgent as countries around the world prepare to roll out fifth-generation or 5G networks that will bring near-instantaneous connectivity, vast data capacity and futuristic technologies such as self-driving cars.

Huawei, based in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, is a leading global vendor of telecoms equipments, which are procured by carriers that provide fixed and mobile connections for consumers and businesses. Now, majority are in the race for foldable devices to appeal to customers.

Its chairman, Guo Ping, addressed the controversy on Sunday, ahead of the formal start of MWC.

"I have noticed the president's Twitter", said Guo.

The chairman of Huawei Technologies said President Trump's assertion that the USA needed to get ahead in mobile communications through competition rather than seeking to block technology was "clear and correct". "I think his message is clear and correct". "Huawei will never, and dare not, and cannot violate any rules and regulations in the countries where we operate", he added.

"Specifically actions that disrupt the equipment supply for the various segments of the network, will increase costs to European operators, businesses and citizens; delay 5G deployment by years across Europe and potentially also jeopardize the functioning of existing 4G networks upon which 5G is meant to be built", read the statement.

Ericsson CEO Borje Ekholm said countries face "critical decisions" as they roll out 5G networks.

"As we talk to our customers, they are feeling the uncertainty and they are concerned", Ekholm told reporters at the MWC show.

As for the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G's release date, no specific date has been provided yet but a release sometime during the second quarter is to be expected. The issue should not be decided by politics, he said. "They will not just listen to someone else's order".
