Android users can now disable background location sharing with Facebook

The company has rolled out new location control for Android app users, and it's sending an alert to users - both on iOS and Android - to check their location settings for the app.

This includes a new background location control so Android users can choose whether they want Facebook to collect location information when they're not actually using the app.

A new update to Facebook's Android app adds an option that lets you turn off location sharing even when the app isn't running. If you let Facebook know where you are, it'll know whether you've got the app open or not. McDonald said the matter was simply a misunderstanding stemming from the fact that Android and Apple offer different privacy settings.

If you're an Android user, Facebook could be tracking your location even when you're not using the app. For those who aren't seeing the notification for whatever reason, just head on over to Settings & Privacy Settings Location Location Settings to turn off Location History. It allows Facebook friends to share their locations with each other and asked users to enable location history till date.

Beyond providing "nearby" benefits to users and being valuable for targeting, attribution and other advertising purposes, Facebook says it also captures user location for account security. The change brings parity to the iOS and Android Facebook apps.

Facebook is one social media application which is blowing the privacy of its users. While this is a potentially questionable practice, it is worth mentioning that this more about how Android works as Google doesn't give users the option to decide how their location data can be used. That option also had given Facebook the ability to keep a history of all the places you've been.

The new feature follows a report from CNBC that Facebook had been using its own app and website to track the location of users that the company felt posed a threat to its employees and offices.
