Five dead, five officers wounded in Illinois shooting

He had been a forklift operator at the plant for the past 15 years.

And the disgruntled coworker who brought a.40-caliber handgun to work the day he was sacked - a weapon that should've been seized years ago due to his criminal past, police say.

The latest mass shooting in the USA took place at Henry Pratt Company, a manufacturing firm in Aurora, a suburb located about 40 miles west of Chicago. According to his LInkedIn page, Pinkard was a 13 year employee of Mueller Water Products, parent company of Henry Pratt.

Martin likely knew he was about to be fired and brought a gun into the meeting, opening fire on all present as soon as he was given the news, Aurora police Chief Kristen Ziman said Saturday. Additional services were scheduled for Sunday.

In the wake of the mass shooting in Aurora, Illinois that left five people dead on Friday, presidential candidate and Sen.

"Loss like this is devastating and senseless", NIU president Lisa C. Freeman said in a statement. "I ask our university community to please keep the Wehner and Parks families, friends and communities in your hearts and offer them caring thoughts".

Wehner, who was set to graduate in May with a degree in human resource management, had never met Gary Martin.

After serving less than three years, he moved to IL and landed a job at Henry Pratt.

The victims of an employee who started shooting after hearing he was being fired at a suburban Chicago industrial warehouse were co-workers that included a plant manager whose wife says he texted her "I love you, I've been shot at work", and an intern in his first day on the job.

The injuries the police officers sustained during the shooting are all considered non-life-threatening. All five of the victims leave shocked family and friends to mourn.

The other victims were Clayton Parks, Russell Beyer, Vicente Juarez and Josh Pinkard, they said. He said hi to a lot of people who came and went.

He said a company background check of Martin when he joined Henry Pratt 15 years ago did not turn up the 1995 felony conviction in Mississippi. However, he was most recently arrested "in 2017 by the Oswego, Illinois Police Department for disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property".

Martin pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison, though records show he served less than three years.

During the shooting, which took 90 minutes to get under control, Martin used a gun with a laser sight, a witness said.

She said background checks for buying the gun and obtaining the FOID card are different than background checks for the concealed-carry permit. The firearm, a Smith & Wesson.40 caliber, was in Martin's possession as of March 11, 2014.

Ziman said Martin's 1995 conviction for aggravated assault in MS, which reportedly involved the bludgeoning and stabbing of a girlfriend, "would not necessarily have shown up on a criminal background check conducted for the FOID card".

Several calls of an active shooter were reported around 1:24 p.m. local time at the manufacturing warehouse and officers arrived roughly four minutes later "and were fired upon immediately", Ziman said.

One officer was hit outside, with others struck inside the building as they entered, Ziman said. There, he shot at more employees.

A sixth officer, who is 23, suffered a minor injury unrelated to gunfire.

At Acorn Woods Condominiums where Martin lived, a mix of brick apartments and condos nestled on a quiet street about 2 kilometres from the shooting, neighbours gathered on sidewalks near Martin's unit talking and wondering among themselves if they knew or had come in contact with him. Beyer's father, Ted Beyer, told the Chicago Sun-Times his son was the union chairman.

A vigil has been planned for the victims Sunday afternoon, February 17.
