Poland may cancel visit to Israel amid new Holocaust spat

In Poland, a new law has been in force for nearly a year that imposes a fine for attributing responsibility to the Polish nation for crimes committed by Nazi Germany. I know the history and I don't whitewash it.

US Vice President Mike Pence, his wife Karen, Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, his wife Iwona and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with his wife Sara are pictured during a wreath laying ceremony at the Ghetto Heroes Monument in Warsaw, Poland, on February 14, 2019.

In the statement, the office stressed that Netanyahu, who attended a USA -sponsored Middle East conference in Warsaw, had not cast any blanket blame in the question of Polish collaboration with Nazi occupiers and had been simply misquoted by the newspaper.

The fresh controversy in Polish-Israeli ties comes after last year's row over a Polish law that made it illegal to accuse the Polish nation or state of complicity in Nazi German crimes. "This was misquoted and misrepresented in press reports and was subsequently corrected by the journalist who issued the initial misstatement", the Israeli statement read. The Polish government summoned the Israeli ambassador on Friday and later said it was not satisfied with the explanation of the Israeli leader being quoted incorrectly.

The Israeli official also told Axios that Netanyahu and Bourita discussed attempts to counter Iranian actions in the region.

The matter of Poland's conduct during the Holocaust - in which numerous six million Jewish dead were killed in Nazi camps on Polish soil - was at the centre of an Israeli-Polish diplomatic dispute past year. The prime ministers of Slovakia and Hungaria are already in Israel.

Mr Netanyahu's comments were "racist and unacceptable", Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki was quoted as saying ahead of Tuesday's summit in Jerusalem. The prime ministers regularly invite counterparts from other countries for those summits.

White House aide Stephen Miller suggested on " Fox News Sunday " that Trump would then issue the first veto of his presidency. Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican and Trump ally, told ABC there were probably enough House Republicans to prevent an override.

The Jerusalem meeting would be the first time the consortium, which was founded in 1991, ever convened outside of Europe.

"There will be no full V4 meeting". The summit in Jerusalem was due to touch on ways the four countries can help fight what Netanyahu considers the European Union's unfair policies toward Israel.

Which is why you can't have both, Mr. Katz: if you keep reminding Poles of their dark past, they won't give you their support.

However, Holocaust researchers have collected ample evidence of Polish villagers who murdered Jews fleeing the Nazis, or Polish blackmailers who preyed on helpless Jews for financial gain.

He said the law came up in a meeting earlier on Thursday with Morawiecki.

At the height of the crisis, Morawiecki at one point equated Polish perpetrators of the Holocaust to supposed "Jewish perpetrators".

"Historical truth can not be changed".
