Modern relations with Vietnam are seen as a model for United States ties with the North.

However, the U.S. and North Korea reached an impasse regarding sanctions relief for Pyongyang soon after the first Summit, leading to extremely slow progress on the denuclearisation front.

The planned Hanoi summit follows on from an unprecedented meeting between the leaders in Singapore last June.

Both sides said they were committed to denuclearisation, but with no details of how this would be carried out or verified.

Mr. Trump revealed in his State of the Union address on February 5 that the meeting would be in Vietnam but did not disclose the city or the date, reports The New York Times.

On Friday evening Washington time, he tweeted that they would meet in Hanoi for "advancing the cause of peace".

Moon and Trump would reportedly have a phone conversation in the foreseeable future. The U.S. leader apparently wants to play up his leadership by advancing diplomacy with North Korea as his plan to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico has been bogged down by opposition from Democrats.

Trump said Wednesday that he will hold a summit with Kim in Vietnam on February 27-28. "If I had not been elected President of the United States, we would right now, in my opinion, be in a major war with North Korea", Trump said Tuesday on Capitol Hill.

North Korea has complained that the U.S. has done little to reciprocate for its actions so far to dismantle some weapons facilities and freeze its weapons testing. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

Trump later complimented Kim, saying that North Korea will "become a great Economic Powerhouse".

South Korea's national security adviser Chung Eui-yong, who met Biegun, reported that U.S.
