Sajjan acting veterans affairs minister after Wilson-Raybould's resignation

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he was surprised and disappointed by Jody Wilson-Raybould's resignation Tuesday.

Prior to Wilson-Raybould's announcement, First Nation leaders in B.C. published an open letter to Trudeau calling on the prime minister to "immediately and categorically publicly condemn the racist and sexist innuendo...being spread by unnamed elected officials and staff of your government in media reports".

Due to her former role as attorney general, Wilson-Raybould says she can't comment on the SNC-Lavalin accusations because she is "bound by solicitor-client privilege".

Wilson-Raybould, who plans to stay on as MP for Vancouver-Granville, has been quiet since the original Globe and Mail story broke, saying she can't comment because she's bound by solicitor-client privilege.

The news comes only days after allegations that Wilson-Raybould was asked to help SNC-Lavalin avoid criminal charges at the request of the Prime Minister's Office.

Her decision follows a week of scrutiny following bombshell allegations of political interference reported by The Globe and Mail.

In her letter Tuesday, she said she has hired former Supreme Court justice Thomas Cromwell to advise her on "the topics that I am legally permitted to discuss in this matter".

Her resignation marks a significant turning point in the emerging SNC-Lavalin affair.

A justice committee is to meet Wednesday and in the meantime, the Office of the Ethics Commissioner has indicated it will conduct an investigation into matters that fall "within their jurisdiction", said Goodale. Wilson-Raybould says that must go on.

"It is important to remember that while the attorney general sits at a certain distance from his cabinet colleagues, in Canada - unlike in other countries - he does not work in isolation from them, or the important experiences or considerations that those colleagues bring to the table".

The scandal is now being looked at by Federal Ethics Commissioner, Mario Dion.
