Virginia delegate backs down on calls to impeach Justin Fairfax

Northam, meanwhile, insisted in an interview on CBS on Monday, that he would not resign over the 1984 yearbook picture, which showed a person in blackface next to another wearing the robes and hood of the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan. Northam has denied being either person in the photo, but he has said he wore blackface on a separate occasion.

In spite of calls from him to be 86'd from the political landscape, in his interview with King, which will air on CBS This Morning on Monday- Northam reiterates that he has no plans to resign.

He is among the top three Democrats in the state who have been rocked by scandal in the past couple of weeks.

Virginia also needs someone who is strong, who has empathy, who has courage and who has a moral compass and that's why I'm not going anywhere.

Many elected officials and presidential hopefuls have called for Fairfax to resign after two women went public with allegations of sexual assault this week. Northam initially apologized for the photo then he flipped the script saying it was not him in the picture.

Democratic lawmakers at the state and national level, along with the state Democratic Party, have demanded Fairfax's resignation, but the lieutenant governor has said he will not step down.

Separately, Duke University said it's investigating a sexual assault allegation dating to 2000 against a former basketball player, which was made by one of the women who's accused Fairfax. And a lot of them did not know enough about Fairfax's response to the allegations to feel strongly about it.

In response to the allegation, Fairfax in his Saturday statement said: "I heard from Dr. Tyson after the 2004 Convention, and she never said or otherwise indicated that our interaction was not consensual or caused her any discomfort". Now many fret their current crisis in leadership will not only cost them chances of winning GOP-held seats, but also several seats currently held by Democrats. "I have a lot more to learn", Northam said on CBS' "Face The Nation".
