Virginia deputy governor Fairfax accused of sexual assault

Virginia deputy governor Fairfax accused of sexual assault

"To be very clear, I did not want to engage in oral sex with Mr. Fairfax and I never gave any form of consent", Tyson said in the statement.

For example, he said, Virginia has a serious issue with infant and maternal mortality - "we've talked about it, now it's time to take action". The governor's own troubles began when a racist image from his medical school yearbook went public on February 1.

In his first interview since the scandal erupted, a chastened Northam told The Washington Post on Saturday that the uproar has pushed him to confront the state's deep and lingering divisions over race, as well as his own insensitivity.

"I think there was an allegation made, right?" "That's why I'm not going anywhere".

Virginia governor Ralph Northam has come to his final decision: he will not resign from office over allegations he posed in blackface in a yearbook photo from the mid-1980s.

For now, it appears Virginians themselves remain split on whether their leaders must step down. "But he sacrificed so much of his ability to govern effectively".

Two women have made allegations against Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax.

Northam's page in his medical school yearbook showed a person in blackface and another in Ku Klux Klan robes, but he says neither person was him. But he could not explain how the photo wound up there, or why he initially had taken responsibility for it.

Venezuela's Independence Being Destroyed Under Cloak of Humanitarian Aid — Maduro
Possible US aggression against Caracas can not be justified, Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro told reporters on Friday. He outlined the move as part of a plan to push the military into cooperating with the opposition.

Fairfax says his sexual encounter with Tyson was consensual. "To do so, would violate any principles I have of faith that says a person can not change", he told AFP.

But the latest allegation of rape brought a torrent of demands for Fairfax to quit, including from all of the state House and Senate Democrats, the Legislative Black Caucus, former Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe and Virginia's two USA senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, both Democrats.

Duke did distribute a statement after the Virginia game, detailing its intent to investigate the claims.

Days after Tyson came forward, Meredith Watson said Farifax raped her in 2000 while the two were students at Duke University. He said: 'It's obvious from what happened this week that we still have a lot of work to do.

"That's all due to the Democrats in Virginia, they've done a terrific job - the three Democrats at the top - of making it easier for Republicans to defend Donald Trump", Sabato said. Northam, a Democrat, has faced calls to resign from prominent figures within his party but has not stepped down.

A fellow Democrat, state House member Patrick Hope, has said he will introduce articles of impeachment against Fairfax on Monday unless the lieutenant governor resigns. Herring, next in line for the governorship after Fairfax, admitted to having once donned blackface in his youth after Northam's yearbook page was revealed.

If Northam steps down, Fairfax is next to line to become governor. Support was higher for Northam among black residents, who by a margin of 58 percent to 37 percent said he should serve out his term. In a poll conducted late last week by The Washington Post and the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, respondents were evenly divided as to whether Northam should resign.
