Janelle Monae Applauds Jump in Grammy Nominations for Women

Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich told the Associated Press that Grande, who is nominated for best pop vocal performance and best pop vocal album, declined to perform Sunday because she "felt it was too late for her to pull something together".

There was a tie for best rap performance, and Drake was surprisingly not one of the winners.

It's always something of a coup when a genre album or single makes an appearance in the big four categories and Carlile's competition will be steep.

In the Best New Artist category, six of the eight nominees are women.

Five women are nominated for Album of the Year, where Brandi Carlile, Cardi B, Kacey Musgraves, Janelle Monae and H.E.R. will compete with Post Malone, Drake and Kendrick Lamar's "Black Panther" soundtrack.

Live red carpet coverage is set to kick off at 5 p.m. EST, and will stream on the Grammy Awards website.

Keys told CBS news this year's greater representation from women was "far overdue".

Palestinian presence at Mideast meeting not a negotiation
The State Department has said more than 40 countries will attended the conference in Warsaw from February 12 to 14. The visit will focus on the economic aspects of the plan, and leave out the politics, the officials said.

The Grammys' tense relationship with the hip-hop community goes back decades. "I'm just so proud to be involved and to go into the studio with such an incredible talent, including the talent that's out there tonight and thank you guys for giving us this platform". "As much as it is about me, it's not just about me", said Monae, who gave a powerful speech a year ago ahead of Kesha's emotional and striking performance celebrating sisterhood and women's rights.

The music world will hit the red carpet on Sunday for the Grammys, with a wider selection of nominees - led by hip-hop royalty and a bevy of talented women - up for the top prizes. "I relax more ... when I know that I am supported by other women ... and I feel like I can do anything".

H.E.R., Chloe x Halle, Margo Price, Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha and Jorja Smith are also up for best new artist.

"This is just the beginning of moving to a more inclusive future", Monae said.

Women were strongly represented at this year's Grammys.

When asked soon after the show about the lack of female winners, academy president Neil Portnow said women needed to "step up" - now-infamous words that instantly drew outrage, and which he said were taken out of context. This marks yet another rough year for the Grammys. Taylor Swift, who was snubbed and scored one nomination, also won't be at the show.

She vowed this year's performances would be the "sickest" yet and feature of-the-moment stars like Lady Gaga and Cardi B as well as icons like country legend Dolly Parton and disco icon Diana Ross, who will take the stage for a Motown tribute.
