Acting attorney general overseeing Mueller probe says he's not interfered

Whitaker was called to the hearing to answer questions about his position at the top of the Justice Department, despite his history of vocalizing opposition to the Mueller investigation. Boyd also responded to Nadler's request for notification if Whitaker planned to assert executive privilege on certain topics. "I assume you know the difference". Members of congress were rude, disrespectful and confrontational while bitterly demanding YES or NO answers from Mr. Whitaker.

Jerrold Nadler of NY, and Whitaker sparred over Nadler's threat to issue a subpoena to compel his appearance to answer questions.

Whitaker faced most scrutiny during the hearing over why he was chosen by Trump to head the Justice Department, rather than the normal line of succession rules being followed. Trump's nominee for a permanent attorney general, Republican William Barr (who served as attorney general under President George H.W. Bush in the early 1990s), could be confirmed by the full Senate as soon as next week.

After a lengthy dispute between the DOJ and the House Judiciary Committee, Whitaker agreed to testify Friday after Nadler agreed late Thursday that he would not subpoena him to compel his testimony.

Wake up to the day's most important news.

"When career officials at the department recommended that you take steps to mitigate your apparent conflicts of interest, . you ignored them", Nadler said.

At 9:30 a.m. ET, Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker is set to testify before the House Judiciary Committee. He said he had no reason to doubt Mueller's honesty or to believe that he was conflicted in his leadership of the investigation.

Whitaker also will say that he had run the Justice Department to the best of his ability, with "fidelity to the law and to the Constitution". Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee got into a testy exchange with the acting attorney general about whether the Mueller investigation was a "witch hunt" - one of the President's signature insults.

'The attorney general was in the middle of saying something.

Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, the senior Republican on the panel, suggested that Whitaker's objection was an appropriate 'place to end'.

Democrats pushed Whitaker on whether he was still critical of the special counsel investigation he is now in charge of.

Jayapal was speaking to Joy Reid on MSNBC about a contentious interaction she had with acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker over family separations at the border. He said Mueller would finish on his own schedule. The letter declared Whitaker wouldn't appear before the panel, unless members withdrew a subpoena, compelling his testimony. The president himself kept an eye on the proceedings before leaving the White House for his annual physical.

Since Democrats took control of the House last month, they have launched several congressional inquiries into Mr Trump's business dealings and his actions as president.
