Russian officials willing to consider USA proposals for new nuclear treaty

President Trump gave notice of withdrawal from the 1987 treaty abolishing intermediate-range ground-based nuclear missiles, known as INF.

The US was in breach of the INF treaty for years, the Russia's defense ministry told the summoned US diplomat, calling on the US to destroy cruise missile launchpads, target-missiles and attack drones to return to INF compliance.

"Under my administration, we will never apologize for advancing America's interests", Trump told U.S. lawmakers assembled in the House chamber.

Russian Federation suspended the INF treaty last weekend after the USA announced that it would pull out of the pact in six months unless Russian Federation ended its violations, which Moscow denies.

We continue to present that intelligence and information to Russian Federation.

"These systems are part of NATO's missile system, so the group is directly responsible of the destruction of the INF Treaty", said Russia's Foreign Affairs Ministry on Monday. Undersecretary for Defense Policy John Rood also said Wednesday there were no plans for such a deployment.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov speaks during a news conference in Moscow on February 7.

"Over the same period we will also have to create a land-based missile system with a long-range hypersonic missile", he said.

However, Ryabkov said all Russia's efforts were ignored or blocked by the United States. So in some respects, that's why I feel as far as the treaty's concerned, pulling out of it, may be the right thing to do because one, it unhand-cuffs the United States, because China is producing nuclear weapons, Iran is producing nuclear weapons, North Korea obviously has nuclear weapons.

But Rinkevics played down the immediate impact of the INF treaty's demise, saying that Russian Federation had already been stepping up military movements since Moscow's 2014 annexation of Crimea. However, he said that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation would continue to work with Moscow in an effort to bring it into compliance.
