Apple’s FaceTime Fix Is Out

Apple is rewarding 14-year-old Arizona high school student Grant Thompson, along with his mother, Michelle, who discovered the FaceTime app's eavesdropping bug. The company has come under fire for its delayed response.

"A logic issue existed in the handling of Group FaceTime calls".

That so-called logic issue, discovered by a teenager in mid-January, burst into the public eye on Jan. 28 and forced Apple to disable the group FaceTime service altogether.

The damage may already have been done, however, as the company is already facing lawsuits over the FaceTime bug as well as an upcoming grilling by concerned lawmakers.

While an Apple spokesperson did not immediately respond to FOX Business' request for comment on the bug bounties, on Thursday it apologized to its customers regarding the FaceTime flaw.

Apple later apologised for the software glitch and said it would roll out the bug fix soon. Should they use the power button to silence or ignore the incoming call, the camera could also have been enabled, giving the dialer both audio and video of the person before they pick up.

As expected, Apple has rushed out a fix for a bug that allowed folks to eavesdrop on others through Group FaceTime. The iOS 12.1.4 update is available for download for compatible iPhone and iPad models. "To protect customers who have not yet upgraded to the latest software, we have updated our servers to block the Live Photos feature of FaceTime for older versions of iOS and macOS", the company said in a media statement, as reported by 9to5Mac.

While they were at it, Apple also slipped in two other security updates in the iOS and macOS releases for vulnerabilities they found Foundation and IOKit that could lead to code execution or privilege escalation.

The iOS 12.1.4 update is compatible with all the iPhone and iPad models running iOS 12.
