President Donald Trump said the USA military would continue to protect Israel, but vowed to push ahead with a controversial troop withdrawal from Syria in an interview aired Sunday.

Further discussing the Syria withdrawal, Trump said the 2,000 troops are slowly beginning to leave the country while combating the "final remainder of the caliphate" and they will later "be going to our base in Iraq, and ultimately, some will be coming home".

"We spent a fortune on building this incredible base. It's perfectly situated for looking at all over different parts of the troubled Middle East rather than pulling up". He said the Iraqi constitution forbids the use of Iraq as a base to threaten the interests or security of neighboring countries.

Trump has said he has no plans to withdraw the 5,200 troops in Iraq, which he says could carry out US airstrikes inside Syria after American troops withdraw from that country. However, Turkey's Islamist president, Recep Erdogan, called the demand "a very serious mistake" and flatly told U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton, "We can not make any concessions in this regard".

In June, the us and Turkey agreed to a deal called the "Manbij Roadmap" in order to prevent a Turkish invasion of the strategic Kurdish city of Manbij.

One concern of Washington is that Iran is looking to build a crescent of influence spanning Iraq and Syria, reaching the Mediterranean.

"We think that building strong relations with the USA for the benefit of the two peoples is important", said a senior Iraqi diplomat, who requested anonymity to speak frankly on a sensitive subject. I went to Iraq recently, if you look at Syria, what's happened in Syria in the last few weeks, you would see that things are going down that were not going down.
