Israel begins construction on massive new barrier surrounding Gaza

The ministry said Turkey supports a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders between Israel and Palestine and "will continue to closely monitor the situation in Hebron with this understanding".

Palestinians have for almost a year gathered at least weekly in various spots along the Gaza border for the protests.

The fence is created to "prevent terrorists from Gaza from penetrating into our territory on the ground", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told media before the weekly cabinet meeting, the website France24 reported.

"The barrier is similar to the one on the Egyptian border, but it has significant improvements and includes innovative security elements", according to the statement from the ministry. It is set to follow the 65-kilometre course of an underground barrier also under construction meant to neutralise the threat of cross-border tunnels built by Gaza militants.
