Solskjaer has hailed the progress McTominay has made at the club.

The DC United star, 33, says it was impossible for the World Cup victor to thrive in a system that smothered any inkling of creativity.

Solskjaer said: 'He's obviously not 100 per cent match fit. Maybe because of ourselves they created many, many chances but first half I thought it was spot on.

'But now we are having more success in attack and we are defending better.

Speaking after the deal was signed, Solskjaer said, "He's an intelligent player and wants to learn all the time".

"I thought he was going to go near post, but it was a well-struck finish".

Solskjaer has been impressed by Rashford since his arrival and is convinced he can develop into one of the best in the world.

"But there's maybe one or two fantastic saves and the rest was just about concentration and being in the right position. He's on a great scoring run right now and I hope it continues for him".

The 45-year-old has been impressed with Rashford's attitude off the field as well and is happy to have local boys like him and Jesse Lingard at his disposal.

Solskjaer could be to United what Zinedine Zidane was to Real Madrid.
