Harrington to captain Europe at 2020 Ryder Cup

Harrington to captain Europe at 2020 Ryder Cup

He's played on five of six victorious European Teams and has been a vice-captain on the past three Ryder Cup's including working closely with Thomas Bjorn in helping steer Europe to an emphatic seven-point success last October in France.

"I can only look at his actions", said Harrington, who succeeds Thomas Bjorn as captain.

"I'm the right man for the job at this time", he said.

"I've just been talking with a few of the members and everyone is delighted with the news", Mr King said.

'It's possibly easier to be Ryder Cup captain at home, but I realise it was good timing in my career and probably the best chance for the team in an global setting, going to the United States having me as captain at this time. I am putting something on the line going out there.

The number of wild cards has varied in recent years, with Jose Maria Olazabal having just two in 2012 and Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke allotted three each in 2014 and 2016 respectively. He has 15 European Tour victories and six on the PGA Tour.

Pavard played a key role in France's World Cup win at Russian Federation 2018 and reports of a move to Bayern have persisted since, although both parties have previously denied any agreement.

And Harrington seemingly had no naysayers among the players.

Mr Pompeo was speaking in Cairo three weeks after President Donald Trump said United States troops were pulling out of Syria. He also said US troops could not leave without guarantees from Turkey that Turkish forces would not attack the YPG.

Harrington has been encouraged by what he said was the "unanimous" support of Europe's players. I know they want continuity.

'It does make my job easier that I feel I have the confidence of the players, ' Harrington added. "I am very much looking forward to taking on this role".

"I will definitely take bits from all of them", Harrington told a news conference. "It's a different league, a different level". There will certainly be more pressure being a Ryder Cup captain, particularly on home soil, and I'm expecting Stricker to find out the difference first hand.

The Irishman said: 'Obviously I'm thrilled to be named as Ryder Cup captain for 2020, it's not something I went into lightly. "But it's not something that I take on without a certain amount of trepidation". Europe has harvested 11 of the 20 events. "If we were coming back to Hazeltine it would be another question of my appetite to go there".

"The second thing is the golf course that we're playing on is a European style golf course, it's a golf course that really suits the European style".

The captain has so much more to think about, and the assistant captains play a big part in the decision-making process.

"You know when you're going up against a guy like that that he is mentally tough and strong. It's an uphill struggle to beat the U.S. in the USA, for sure". "We've had good performances from Europeans on that golf course for years".

"So yes, I think Steve will be a nice Ryder Cup captain".
