Wayne Rooney arrested for public swearing, intoxication at Virginia airport

England's record goalscorer, Wayne Rooney, was arrested for public intoxication and swearing in Washington last month, according to a report in the US.

The 33-year-old forward came to the USA capital last July, signing with DC United and taking the last-place Major League Soccer club into the playoffs in his first half-season with the squad.

The Loudon County Sheriff's Office in Virginia said Rooney was jailed December 16 after his arrest on the misdemeanour charge by police at the Dulles International Airport in Virginia and then released on his own recognizance.

Court files state he paid a fine of $25 (£19.65) and costs of $91 (£71.50) over his latest offence.

Rooney's club at the time, Everton, fined him around two weeks' wages as a effect - about £300,000.

The 33-year-old was arrested on December 16 at Washington's Dulles airport, near the stadium for his current team, DC United.

"During the flight Wayne took a prescribed amount of sleeping tablets mixed with some alcohol consumption and consequently was disorientated on arrival. The matter is now at an end".

He started his career with English Premier League club Everton in 2002, before joining Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2004.

Rooney was banned from driving for two years and ordered to carry out unpaid community work after being arrested for drink-driving in September 2017.

Rooney signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the MLS side in June 2018, lifting the team from the bottom of their division to the first round of the play-offs in his first season.

He also received a two-year driving ban and was docked two weeks' wages - around $380,000 - by Everton.
