Romney has attacked Trump's character in the past, most notably during a speech in the 2016 election in which he stated that "dishonesty is Donald Trump's hallmark".

Romney will be sworn in to represent Utah in the U.S. Senate on Thursday.

In describing a "deep descent" by the Trump presidency in December, Romney cited the departures of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House chief of staff John Kelly and what he called the appointment of people of lesser experience, the abandonment of allies, and Trump's "thoughtless claim that America has always been a "sucker" in world affairs".

"I think it's gonna backfire on him", he said to Neil Cavuto.
