Swiss national arrested in connection with murders in Morocco

Morocco's Central Bureau for Judicial Investigations said on Saturday the Swiss-Spanish national was suspected of "teaching some of those arrested. about communication tools involving new technology and of training them in marksmanship".

It said he subscribed to "extremist ideology" and also had Spanish citizenship.

Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, 24, from Denmark, and Maren Ueland, 28, from Norway, were butchered on a hiking holiday in the Atlas mountains by wannabe ISIS fanatics.

Authorities arrested several days ago the four suspected terrorists who perpetrated the mid-December murders of the two Scandinavian tourists, and who made a video in which they appear to pledge their loyalty to the Islamic State (IS).

The suspect, authorities believe, was a local terrorist recruiter.

Fifteen people have been charged in connection with the murders of two Scandinavian university students in Morocco.

Morocco had already arrested 19 people over the deaths.

Unlike much of North Africa which has been buffeted by violent attacks, uprisings and revolutions, Morocco has been largely stable in recent years. Tunisia and Egypt have also suffered insecurity and terror attacks since their own long-term leaders were toppled by mass protests.

Morocco, which relies heavily on tourism income, has been spared any major jihadist attacks since 2011 when a bomb blast at a cafe in Marrakech's famed Jamaa El Fnaa Square killed 17 people, majority European backpackers.

Morocco intelligence spokesman Boubker Sabik referred to the attackers as a "lone wolf, hastily organised terrorist cell", adding that the crime "was not co-ordinated with Islamic State [Daesh]".

But none of the four had contact with IS members in Syria or Iraq, he said.
