Philippines floods death toll hits 68

Typhoon Mangkhut, the strongest tropical cyclone of the year, wracked the island nation with winds of winds of 200km/h (125 mph) in September.

The weather bureau said the tropical depression, locally named Usman, has weakened into a low-pressure area after making landfall but warned that eastern and central provinces would continue to experience rains.

In its latest official update, the agency said the death toll had climbed to 68 with a further 12 people injured.

Fifty of the victims were killed in five provinces in the eastern region of Bicol, which bore the brunt of heavy rains brought by a tropical depression, authorities say. Eleven others died in the nearby region of Eastern Visayas. We are sending troops and rubber boats to rescue families.

However, Yucot said many others made a decision to stay after the government's weather agency downgraded the storm's severity warning.

NDRRMC executive director and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) administrator Undersecretary Ricardo Jalad, said the NDRRMC through the Management of the Dead and the Missing (MDM) Cluster led by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), is still validating the reported 61 fatalities.
